When you start your driving license course, you’ll begin in a new class where all students are starting fresh. At your first theory session, you’ll be given a detailed explanation of the theory and practical steps required to obtain a driving license. It’s recommended that you bring your medical certificate to your first theory session, so we can get you quickly approved by Citizen Services.
There are legal requirements for the content of the training. These requirements are the absolute minimum – but ultimately, it’s your own performance that determines whether you’ll need additional lessons.
Legal requirements:
Note! Be aware that not everyone can complete the training with only the minimum required by law.
When you and your instructor agree that your skills are sufficient, we’ll schedule your driving test. The practical test is taken in the same car you’ve been training in.
According to Danish law, the driving license education must follow a structured lesson plan and span at least 14 instructional days.
You may need additional training in specific areas such as roundabouts, left turns, or parallel parking, and therefore require extra lessons focused on those topics. Most students should expect to need more than the minimum 16 driving lessons. To pass the driving test, you must be able to operate the vehicle safely and confidently in traffic, demonstrating the skills we've practiced during your driving sessions.
Each time you complete a module in the lesson plan, both you and your instructor will sign off on it with the date and time spent. There must be no more than 3 months between these dates; otherwise, you risk having to start your entire driving course over. – There are a few exceptions to this 3-month rule depending on how far you are in your course, but to be safe, always continue within 3 months of your last session.
Since January 1, 2017, a 3-year pilot scheme has allowed 17-year-olds to obtain a driving license and drive with an experienced driver as a supervisor until they turn 18. The scheme is still in effect.
This is a kind of mentorship scheme aimed at making young drivers safer in traffic. 17-year-olds must complete exactly the same driving instruction as those who are 18 or older. The only major difference is that they are not allowed to drive alone until they turn 18. Driving lessons can begin at the earliest 3 months before turning 17. The theory test can be taken 1 month before turning 17, and the practical driving test can be taken on your 17th birthday. Read more about getting a driving license at 17 further down or at sikkertrafik.dk.
If you are still 17 when you pass your driving test, you must always drive with a supervisor until you turn 18.
The supervisor must be at least 30 years old. He or she must have held a driving license for a passenger car for the past 10 years without any revocations during that time. The supervisor must be able to legally drive the car at all times.
It is your responsibility to inform your supervisor about the requirements they must meet in order to accompany you while you're behind the wheel. You must be able to document to the police that you have done so.
It's a good idea to practice as much as possible with an adult you trust and who is good at teaching. This will help you build solid driving experience and become a safer driver by the time you turn 18 and are allowed to drive alone. When you drive with a supervisor at age 17, you are only allowed to drive within Denmark.
